Iraq Death Toll 2,015,237 *
I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilized tribes.
Winston Churchill, 1919, on murdering the Iraqi resistance to Briti$h occupation
Iraqi deaths at the hands of imperialism stretch back across the 20th century at least to the Briti$h conquest of Iraq in 1917. From that direct-rule kolonialism, with its shock and awe firebombing and mustard gas shelling of Iraqis, through a series of repressive, imperialist-backed comprador regimes, to the amerikan subjugation of Iraq today, thousands upon thousands of Iraqi lives have been lost to imperial blood lust.
On December 12, 2005 amerikan psychopath president Bu$h slipped, stumbled, and lurched in the direction of truth when he stated that 30,000 Iraqis "more or less" had died since the u$ invasion began. This accords with Iraqi death counts such as iraqbodycount.org which tally deaths only as they are reported in the press. However, a study published in the medical journal The Lancet concluded that already as of September, 2004 at least 100,000 Iraqis had died as a direct result of the u$ war. This study employed a methodology designed to estimate deaths that are likely to go underreported in the press, such as those caused by the massive arial bombardments utilized by the amerikkkans upon the populace of Iraq. Imperialismkills accepts this study as a valid approximation of Iraqi noncombatant deaths inflicted by this current imperialist war in the time period covered, but we appreciate Bu$h's statement as evidence that nobody's perfect, and even inveterate liars can fuck up and tell something like the truth.(http://www.zmag.org/lancet.pdf)

Indepedent reporter Robert Fisk had close relationships with people who ran the morgue in Baghdad. He was told that in July 2005 there were more than 1100 violent deaths in the city of Baghdad alone. He extrapolates this number to imply that the 100,000 dead estimate by Lancet, for the period from March 2003 to September 2004, could be significantly underestimated.

The current imperialist war on Iraq. "Making conservative assumptions, we think that about 100,000 excess deaths, or more have happened since the 2003 invasion of Iraq," concludes a study published October 29, 2004 in the medical journal The Lancet. This study used random sampling techniques to extrapolate estimates for the whole of Iraq based on interviews with selected small groups. This accunts for the fact that the concluding estimate of Iraqi deaths due to U$ invasion and occupation of Iraq is three to ten times that of such estimates as that of iraqbodycount.org, which counts only deaths of civilians and only as these deaths are reported in the media. Imperialismkills is not a liberal enterprise; as anti-imperialists, we consider ennumerating deaths of courageous Iraqi resistance fighters and laying that crime at the feet of imperialism to be our internationalist duty. So we are less impressed with death toll counts like that of iraqbodycount.org which considers the deaths of fighters for the oppressed not worth reporting. The Lancet study, while also aimed at civilian deaths, does admit that its methodology allows for the possibility that some resistance fighter deaths are included in its total, and that's fine with us. Additionally, the Lancet study suggests that tallys like iraqbodycount.org are reliable only as indicators of trends in the numbers of deaths and cautions against using these figures as an acutal representation of numbers killed. This is because such counts rely on the "passive" data collection means of monitoring media reporting and are thus likely to underreport deaths which the media are not able to cover accurately, such as those caused by the massive arial bombardments of the Iraqi population by the amerikkkan invaders. Imperialismkills accepts this study as an accurate minimum estimate of non-combatant Iraqi deaths caused by imperialism during the time period covered. (Chicago Public Radio interviews one of the authors of this study regarding the amerikkkan media's preference for reporting the much lower and scientifically less accurate Iraqi death total.

The imperialist sanctions years. In 1995 UNICEF reported:
Sanctions are inhibiting the importation of spare parts, chemicals, reagents, and the means of transportation required to provide water and sanitation services to the civilian population of Iraq... What has become increasingly clear is that no significant movement towards food security can be achieved so long as the embargo remains in place. All vital contributors to food availability - agricultural production, importation of foodstuffs, economic stability and income generation, are dependent on Iraq's ability to purchase and import those items vital to the survival of the civilian population. The UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) reported in September 1995 that:
Famine threatens four million people in sanctions-hit Iraq - one fifth of the population - following a poor grain harvest... The human situation is deteriorating. Living conditions are precarious and are at pre-famine level for at least four million people... The deterioration in nutritional status of children is reflected in the significant increase of child mortality, which has risen nearly fivefold since 1990.
UN figures show that more than 1.7 million Iraqi civilians died as a result of the sanctions. Over 500,000 of these deaths were Iraqi children. These were the deaths that then U$ $ecretary of $tate Madeline Albright assessed as "worth it" to amerika in order to conquer Iraq.

The imperialist Gulf War. A study published in Medicine and Global Survival estimates that approximately 205,000 Iraqi deaths are attributable to effects of the u$-led 1991 Gulf War and its immediate aftermath.
According to the methods described in this paper, the number of Iraqis who died in 1991 from effects of the Gulf war or postwar turmoil approximates 205,500. There were relatively few deaths (approximately 56,000 to military personnel and 3,500 to civilians) from direct war effects. Postwar violence accounted for approximately 35,000 deaths. The largest component of deaths in this reconstruction derives from the 111,000 attributable to postwar adverse health effects. Of the total excess deaths in the Iraqi population, approximately 109,000 were to men, 23,000 to women, 74,000 to children.
Included in this estimate are 35,000 deaths that occurred immediately after the war ceased.
Beginning on March 1, 1991, the day after the cease fire, uprisings began to sweep through Iraq. The violence was primarily in the Kurdish north and Shiite south during March and April 1991. An untold number of people died, and the estimate in this report of excess deaths during this time is the most uncertain. In Endless Torment, Middle East Watch describes a scene of mass chaos in northern and southern Iraq. Although the number killed in the postwar turmoil is impossible to estimate, two independent sources (William Arkin and the U.S. Census Bureau) arrived at the same estimate: 30,000 civilian deaths and 5,000 military deaths.
Imperialismkills does not hesitate to include these murders committed by the Saddam Hussein regime in the total death indictment against imperialism. Saddam Hussein is himself one of those "friendly dictators" of imperialist manufacture like such familiar models as Ngo Diem of Vietnam, Marcos of the Philippines, Noriega of Panama, etc.
