The Imperialist Death Toll is a project of the Revolutionary Anti-Imperialist League (RAIL). It was started at the end of 2002 in response to the bourgeois literature that loves to throw around death tolls from communism. While the fallacy of many of these numbers has been proven elsewhere, this site serves as evidence that no system has proven more destructive to humyn lives than imperialism.
In our first version of this site RAIL focused on recording deaths as they occured in the current year. These efforts were incomplete due to lack of diligence and participation. In September 2005 we launched our revamped version of the Death Toll tracker. This allows us to categorize the information by year and hence to fill in historical information. The new site also makes it easier for more people to contribute to the project. It is our hope that it will provide the resources to build the most comprehensive documentation of the death toll of imperialism.

A while back, comrades working with ImperialismKills agreed that it was not the best use of our time to be combing the news daily for death statistics. There are others out there compiling that data. And the killings in battlefields like Iraq and Afghanistan are just a portion of the deaths that result from those invasions. Therefore, more research is needed to come up with meaningful numbers.
Even if we never reach our original goal of having an approximate number that we can pin to the death toll from imperialism, this project serves as the best attempt so far and has already been the basis of effective agitational work. We continue to welcome volunteers and contributions.
